I love weddings. I love weddings of people I know, and I love weddings where I don't know a soul besides my date. I think it's because I'm surrounded by such happiness and love, and - at the risk of sounding more cynical than I am - witnessing the union makes me believe.
I had a wonderful time at Marisa and Tom's wedding in the famous Decoration & Design Building last night. My friend Pete asked me to go as his "date" as a favor. I had met Tom once before and really liked him, so I was happy to oblige. It was an extremely couple-y affair, and Pete and I fielded questions all night long about how we met, but we non-awkwardly explained that we met through the online dating site, OkCupid, and went on a couple of dates, but decided that we liked/disliked each other too much to date each other, haha.
Incidentally, Tom and Marisa met via OkCupid also. They had a whirlwind romance, and were married less than a year after they first met.
Even though the wedding was on a particularly blustery, freezing day in December, I wanted the card I made for the happy couple to reflect sunshine and renewal. I used thin, copper-colored wire and different-sized cylinders to create curlicues as flower stems.
I joked and laughed with Pete and Tom's friends and their significant others, had top shelf liquor, ate lamb skewers and pork loin and a dozen varieties of Italian cold cuts, danced to Madonna and had happy, soul-bearing (drunk) conversations all night long. I paid big time for my excesses today and had to cancel on a Woodside Thai food excursion, but it was worth it.
It's been a whirlwind of fun activities since Thanksgiving, and I've been working 14, 15 hour-days on top of it, so I'm pretty exhausted. I wouldn't trade it for anything, though... events such as heading into the bowels of the Bronx for Latvian food and chatting with old first- and second-generation Latvians at their annual Christmas party is so... life-affirming. I'm getting to spend quality time with old friends and am making tons of new friends. It looks like it's going to be a fun-filled holiday season!
I'm invited to a bunch of things this month, many of which will necessitate thank you cards, so more holiday-themed cards coming up!
